The American Legion team won its fifth straight game to break a three-way tie and vault to the undisputed leadership of the American loop standings in the Rutherford Little League this week.
An extra inning victory over Pasquin, in which the Legionnaires overcame a one run deficit in the seventh to win going away with a five run outburst by 13-9 Tuesday, gave the Legion squad a half game lead over the Elks, who split two games during the week.
The Lions, who led the loop just seven days ago, are now knotted up with the Elks, both a half game away from the league leaders, while Pasquin is firmly cemented in the American loop cellar, five games off the pace.
The Legion had to fight back from behind all the way Tuesday. Trailing Pasquin by 7-6 after two innings of play, they knotted things with a single tally in the fourth. Ross singled, went to second on an infield out and came all the way home on a passed ball.
Pasquin was back in the lead with a singleton in the sixth when Fitzgerald walked and came home on Sloans single to center. But the Legion stayed in the game with a run of their own in the sixth to force overtime.
Ross singled and eventually came home on a long fly to right field.
Again Pasquin went ahead, this time on a solo effort by Matawa, but the Legion, paced by Kievets big double, answered with five runs of their own to win the game and take over first place.
