( 4- 1) ELKS 0 0 3 1 0 5 -- 9 7 1 ( 4- 2) LIONS 0 0 2 0 2 0 -- 4 6 7 W - Place (2-0) L - Hagerman (2-1) HR - JVanderveer (1)
On Thursday, the Elks handed the Lions their second straight defeat to take over first place.
The Lions loose fielding and the hitting of the Elks Phil Place cost the league-leaders their top spot in the standings. Five sixth-inning runs sewed up what had been a close and exciting game.
Places double followed by Johnny Vanderveers homer and singles by Jim Caravillana and Paul Hanley got the Elks off to a three-run lead in the top of the third, but the Lions bounced back with two in their half of the inning on Al Stones single and five walks.
Place tripled and Marty Lefkowitz singled to send him home to make it 4-2 after four, but a pass and singles by Dave Kuncken, Ray Reardon and John Sondey tied it up in the fifth.
Two errors, two walks, a hit and Hanleys single iced the game in the top of the sixth.
