After 54 years of loyal support, the Rutherford/East Rutherford Kiwanis Club drops its sponsorship, citing a declining membership. A.W. Van Winkle & Co., a real-estate firm with roots in the 17th century, moves up from the Triple-A league to assume the sponsorship.
All four of Rutherfords 12- and 10-year-old teams go undefeated in District 5 pool play. In the 12-year-old tournament, Rutherford National stays unbeaten through the district final and the section tournament, held at Rutherford for the first time since 1995. The team advances to the state finals at Livingston American Little League. To top it off, the 8-year-old tournament team goes unbeaten in winning the Lyndhurst tournament.
At seasons end, Pete DeLuise announces that he will not stand for re-election to the board of directors, concluding a record 40-year tenure with the League that included 14 seasons as manager of Kiwanis and three years as league president.
