Rutherford Little League Tournament Play, 1951

By Little League regulation, Rutherford, as a new league, was not permitted to enter the Little League Tournament in 1951. However, the League was invited to field a team in a local tournament of champions hosted by the Lyndhurst Little League in late August.

The trouble was that the season was running late, and two of the league’s four teams, Kiwanis and Rotary, were neck-and-neck going down the stretch. To make matters worse, one of their scheduled matches against each other had been rained out twice. As a result, the league played an off-schedule game between the two teams in order to determine the league’s entry in the Lyndhurst tournament. Rotary won the game, 11-9, and the team moved on to the tournament, picking up select players from other teams in the league in order to field a more representative team.

Rutherford drew Clifton in the first round, and the teams battled to a 4-4 draw in a darkness-shortened game on Monday, August 20. That led to a replay the next day, and Clifton scored eight runs in the fifth to put away an 11-2 decision.
