Québec was the first Canadian province I visited as a solo traveler. In 1987, I was touring in upstate New York, and I decided to make a day trip to Montréal, the most cosmopolitan city in the province. Several of my subsequent visits have centered on that city, but I have toured other areas, particularly down the St. Lawrence to Québec, the provincial capital, home of an old hilltop fortress and hotbed of French Canadian culture. In 2015, I took a ride up into the hills above Québec and on to Lac Saint-Jean. Someday, I’d like to make it out to the Gaspé peninsula as well as continuing to tour the Laurentians.
