The road, which runs in conjunction with CR 646 for its entire length, was at one time part of a larger state highway. NJ 6N was the primary route through Paterson while NJ 6 was being completed through Clifton and Little Falls. Once NJ 6 (now Route 46) was completed, 6N was orphaned. However, with the construction of the Bergen-Passaic Expressway (I-80), the state decided to retain a stretch of the road between the neighboring east-west highways, while ceding the rest of the old 6N to county or municipal authorities. The north end of state control is the end of the ramp from I-80 west onto Union Boulevard north.
