Highways of Passaic County, New Jersey

NJ 4 was built in the early 1930s, using both existing roads and new construction. At that time, the road was projected to go all the way to Cape May, although it was never designated between Paterson and Woodbridge. US 9 mostly follows a 1940s alignment of NJ 4 south of Sayreville. The Garden State Parkway was originally envisioned as a later bypass of NJ 4.

The original plan for NJ 4 westbound was to follow NJ 3 (now NJ 20) and then NJ 6 (now US 46) before turning southward toward the Shore. Accordingly, the western terminus of NJ 4 was at one time the ramps leading down onto NJ 20. This has since been changed; the highway is now deemed to begin on Broadway, an eighth of a mile before the county line. West of that point, Broadway (also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Way) is under municipal control.
