At one time, the Erie Railroad main line ran through the middle of Passaic. Crossing out of East Rutherford, the line cut behind Passaic Schools Stadium and then came right up the middle of Main Avenue before cutting slightly to the east and heading for Paterson and points beyond. After the Passaic River bridge was wiped out in the mid-1950s, Passaic lobbied to tear out the tracks through the middle of town. With the city still served by the nearby Lackawanna line, the Erie-Lackawanna agreed, and the strip where the tracks once ran down Main Avenue became a municipal parking lot.
Since then, the tracks have been torn out further to the north, as well as in the East Rutherford section. However, roads that never crossed the tracks still don’t. Highland Avenue is one of these. A section west of the tracks is CR 613. Small sections exist on either end that are maintained by the City of Passaic rather than by the county.
