Starting from Hoboken, the DL&W traversed New Jersey, crossed the Delaware River at Knowlton, and continued up to Scranton, the seat of Lackawanna County, Pa., and beyond. The road was best known for delivering, and running its steam engines on, anthracite coal, which burned cleaner than other forms. The Lackawanna’s most famous train was the Phoebe Snow, named for an advertising character who was able to ride the line wearing a white gown which would not become covered with soot because she was riding “the Road of Anthracite”.
While much of the old Lackawanna track has been removed, including a section through Paterson, the line’s legacy lives on in the form of the NJ Transit Delawanna Station, located where the tracks cross Delawanna Avenue.
