Old gas station maps (from the 1930s and ’40s) show NJ 7 continuing up Passaic Avenue to Main Avenue, and then turning left and meeting the then-posted course of NJ 6 in downtown Paterson. However, as I describe here, the northern terminus of NJ 7 Section 2 (the Essex County section) is the Passaic County line. The real mystery, though, is that not only is NJ 7 not continued up to its logical end at NJ 3, but the section of Passaic Avenue between NJ 7 and NJ 3 (0.24 mile) is not even a county road! It is maintained by the City of Clifton, although there is one NJDOT-posted trailblazer a block south of NJ 3 showing the distance to Kearny and Jersey City.
North of NJ 3, Passaic Avenue is a county road up to Brook Avenue. At Brook Avenue, there is a little sign denoting the end of Passaic County maintenance. The street is maintained by the City of Passaic from there on out, except for a short stretch under the Lackawanna tracks next to Third Ward Park that is part of CR 614 (a break in Van Houten Avenue because of the tracks).
The NJDOT straight-line diagram for CR 603 is inventoried from north to south, for some reason. I have reversed the inventory on this log.
