State Highways of New Jersey

Interstate 278 was originally planned as a beltway that would connect to I-78 somewhere around Union, cross Staten Island, and meet I-78 again at the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn. However, the highway was never built west of Route 1 in Linden. Indeed, it does not connect to I-78 at all, as the Lower Manhattan Expressway, which would have connected the Holland Tunnel to the Manhattan Bridge bypassing Canal Street, was canceled in the 1970s.

As it stands, I-278 begins in Linden, crosses the Goethals Bridge (an old span scheduled for replacement by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey), and follows the Staten Island Expressway to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Entering Brooklyn, it becomes the Gowanus Expressway and then the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, crossing the Kosciusko Bridge into Queens and passing the Long Island Expressway before briefly joining the Grand Central Parkway as it approaches the Triborough (now Robert F. Kennedy) Bridge. Finally, I-278 utilizes the Bruckner Expressway through the Bronx, ending at the infamous Bruckner interchange (which overlays an earlier traffic circle) with the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95 to the George Washington Bridge, I-295 to the Throgs Neck Bridge) and Hutchinson River Parkway (I-678 to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge). The Bruckner Expressway continues northward, designated I-95, to Pelham Bay Park, at which point I-95 becomes the New England Thruway (operated by the New York State Thruway Authority).
