State Highways of New Jersey

The road effectively replaced a proposed project to extend NJ 38 from Westampton to Belmar, although it does take Burlington and Camden County traffic a bit out of the way in order to do that. NJ 38 still ends at US 206; the portion of NJ 38 that was built between Wall and Belmar was renamed NJ 138, as no connection exists between the roads. SR 537 is a shorter route between Mount Holly and I-95 in Jackson by mileage but not necessarily by time.

The freeway extends for a short distance on each end of I-195. West of Hamilton, the NJ 29 freeway takes traffic to the riverfront district and state capitol area of Trenton. East of NJ 34 in Wall, NJ 138 remains a freeway for a little over half a mile.

I-195 is dedicated to James J. Howard, a legislator who pushed for the relief route to be completed.

When the “missing link” of I-95 is completed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and PennDOT, perhaps in the late 2010s, I-95 will be rerouted onto the easternmost few miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, instead of the northern section of the Delaware Expressway and the current I-95 in Mercer County. The current proposal is for the I-195 designation to be extended along I-295 from the highways’ junction northward through Hamilton and Lawrence, and then along the current I-95 across the Scudder Falls Bridge into Pennsylvania, extending to the new junction. I-195 would become about 25 miles longer as a result (9 miles in Pennsylvania and 16 miles in New Jersey).
