State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 138 is the remnant of a proposal to extend NJ 38 (which runs from Pennsauken to Westampton) all the way to Belmar. The road would have followed alongside SR 537 along the northern edge of Fort Dix and on into Jackson, and then would have turned eastward. This eastern stretch, originally designated as part of NJ 38, was only built from NJ 34 to NJ 35. Eventually, I-195 was built across central Jersey, relieving the strain on NJ 38 and other local roads, and this fragment of highway, which I-195 runs into, was renumbered 138.
