State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 91 began its life as NJ 26A, an alternate routing for the northern end of NJ 26, the old Trenton-New Brunswick Turnpike. This road, Jersey Avenue, stays completely to the west of the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, which cut across the old turnpike in North Brunswick, a little over a mile south of the New Brunswick city limit. Before upgrades to US 1 resulted in a grade separation between the highway and the rail line, it was often more convenient to avoid crossing the tracks; Jersey Avenue runs into French Street, NJ 27, only a few blocks from the train station in downtown New Brunswick.

That said, Jersey Avenue is no longer designated as a state highway all the way into downtown New Brunswick. State jurisdiction ends at Van Dyke Avenue, and Jersey Avenue continues to downtown as a Middlesex County road.

There is a NJ Transit station called Jersey Avenue on the Northeast Corridor line (the old Pennsylvania Railroad); NJ 91 brings riders to a park-and-ride lot at the station.
