State Highways of New Jersey
For years, motorists had no clue that NJ 62 even existed. This short stretch of highway connecting US 46 and I-80 in Totowa, which was completely unsigned for decades, now has markers on exit ramps from Route 46 and on traffic signal overheads along its length.
The road, which runs in conjunction with Passaic CR 646 for its entire length, was at one time part of a larger state highway. NJ 6N was the primary route through Paterson while NJ 6 was being completed through Clifton and Little Falls. Once NJ 6 (now Route 46) was completed, 6N was orphaned. However, with the construction of the Bergen-Passaic Expressway (I-80), the state decided to retain a stretch of the road between the neighboring east-west highways, while ceding the rest of the old 6N to county or municipal authorities. The north end of state control is the end of the ramp from I-80 west onto Union Boulevard north.
