Quick Facts:

The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society was established in 1996 to preserve the heritage of the Athletics, who represented the City of Brotherly Love in the American League from 1901-54 before moving to Kansas City. (The club is now in Oakland, Calif.) Hatboro, a town which got its name because soldiers’ hats were manufactured there during the American Revolutionary War, is about 15 miles north of center city Philadelphia on York Road, one of the through routes to New York that predates the establishment of expressways and freeways.

The Society endeavors to collect research materials as well as memorabilia regarding the Athletics and their home fields, Columbia Park (1901-08) and Shibe Park (1909-54, renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953 and used by the rival Phillies from 1938-70). In 2004, the Society Museum received the Connie Mack Wall of Fame plaques that had been installed on the concourse of Veterans Stadium. They are now proudly installed along a wall of the museum.

In addition to maintaining their storefront museum, the Society has been active in the community. Projects include the placing of historical markers commemorating Connie Mack (in Philadelphia) and Eddie Plank (in Gettysburg), as well as indicating the locations of Shibe Park and the old Phillies’ park down Lehigh Avenue, Baker Bowl.
