Home of the Cougars

Home plate entrance to Jim Hynes Stadium, off Green Lane.

A look in at the facility from left field.

The view from behind the plate. The snow mound down the foul line is obviously temporary.

Quick Facts:
Newark State College, an institution dating to 1855, relocated to the old Kean farm in Union (between the Morris & Essex railroad line and the City of Elizabeth) in the 1960s and renamed itself for the benefactor who donated the land. The one-time teacher’s college attained university status in the 1990s.

The current baseball field was built in 2000, after a sizable donation by Jim Hynes, Class of 1963. There is seating capacity for 700 behind home plate and behind the team benches, and a high screen protects traffic on Green Lane from foul balls. An upgrade in 2007 added artificial turf to the facility. That spring, the Cougars won the NCAA Division III championship.

The athletic complex also includes Alumni Stadium, used for track and field, football, and other rectangular-field sports; Cougar Field, a softball stadium; tennis courts; and a concession and rest room building. Harwood Arena, the indoor sports and recreation facility, is adjacent.
