The primary rules for eligibility to be included in my top-song list are that the title must have reached the top 30 within the Billboard Hot 100 chart for at least one week, and that the song must have dropped off the Hot 100 before the year’s new Top 500 is published. Recordings issued after 1990 may not have been released as commercial singles; these songs are eligible if they were on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart at No. 30 or above for at least one week.
The first three columns of the survey are the title’s current position within my top 500, last year’s position, and the number of years I’ve listed it on my survey (of the top 30, 100, or 500).
Generally, the date appearing next to a song title and artist is the year in which the song first reached the top 30, and the adjacent number is the song’s peak position on the Hot 100. (A small “a” next to the number indicates a position on Hot 100 Airplay, as the song did not chart on the Hot 100.)
