Originally, the state planned to build a NJ 41 bypass of downtown Haddonfield, which was begun but never completed. As a result, signs declaring the downtown route as “temporary” NJ 41 were erected. This stretch of highway remained under the jurisdiction of Camden County, and it was eventually designated as SR 573. In 2001, sixty years after the Haddonfield bypass was started, the state finally abandoned the project and decided that NJ 41 officially ran along its “temporary” routing on SR 573. However, the TEMPORARY banner still exists on road signs along the county-maintained stretch, and signal overheads (with black on white lettering within Haddonfield borough) proclaim the road as only SR 573.
The short stretch of the Haddonfield bypass that was built exists today as Brace Road, NJ 154.
