State Highways of New Jersey


SR 531 originates in the Bonhamtown section of Edison Township and heads north, through Metuchen and the Plainfields, before climbing the Watchung ridge to end up just across the Passaic River in Long Hill Township, the southernmost community of Morris County. Long Hill used to be known as Passaic Township, for the scenic river that forms its boundary, but it changed its name in the mid-1990s to distinguish itself from the much gritter city of Passaic located quite a ways downstream.

In North Plainfield, the road follows two different paths for northbound and southbound traffic, owing to the way the crossing of US 22 was built. Northbound traffic uses Watchung Avenue, while southbounders follow the original course, Somerset Street. The routes are combined for this log.
