State Highways of New Jersey

There is a question as to where SR 527 runs as it crosses from Old Bridge into East Brunswick. The NJDOT straight-line diagram for the highway shows that it hops up onto NJ 18 for about 0.8 mile between its Englishtown Road segment and its Old Bridge Turnpike segment, but the diagram does not show Main Street in East Brunswick as part of the alignment, leaving a short break in the road. Recent signal overhead signage placed by NJDOT, however, says that the highway utilizes Old Matawan Road to cross the railroad tracks. Old Matawan Road, which is not maintained by Middlesex County, is the extension of Old Bridge-Matawan Road (SR 516) down to the South River. The river bridge is weight-restricted, and trucks have long been forced to use NJ 18 in that stretch. The railroad crossing on Old Matawan Road is at grade.

The highway has a two-way split in Millburn, Essex County, as its original routing along Main Street is now one-way. Both routings are combined in this log (the southbound road uses Essex Street and Douglas Drive). For one block in Millburn, northbound SR 527 and southbound SR 577 run concurrently along Main Street.
