The original plan for NJ 10 was to have the highway continue down the hill from West Orange, through East Orange and Newark, and then across Kearny to meet with the Belleville Turnpike. The section east of Prospect Avenue never came under state control, however, and county roads serve that route, which has largely been bypassed by I-280. SR 508 provides an alternate route for this traffic, and it incorporates Harrison Avenue in Harrison and Kearny.
As noted, several sections of the highway in West Orange, Newark, and Harrison are designated as part of SR 508, but controlled by the respective municipalities rather than the counties. The highway is legislated along Kingsley Street in West Orange, but that road is one-way northbound; eastbound traffic must continue to Valley Road (crossing I-280 twice) in order to rejoin the highway.
