State Highways of New Jersey

SR 506 was recognized as a high-priority highway corridor by the state legislature and the State Highway Commission in 1927, when they designated NJ 9 as running “From NJ 6 in Pine Brook, through Caldwell and Belleville, to Jersey City.” While the stretch in Hudson County is now Section 1 of NJ 7, the Essex County portion continued to be maintained by the county highway department and now comprises SR 506.

The road utilizes parts of two old turnpikes. The Newark-Pompton Turnpike started from Newark and headed up to Verona, where it bore to the right and passed through Mountain View (now part of Wayne Township) and Pequannock, ending at the Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike. Another road bore off to the left in Verona and headed to Denville and Dover. When the portion of the Pompton Turnpike north of Verona became NJ 23, the remainder of the two roads were united under the banner of Bloomfield Avenue.

However, SR 506 follows the plan laid out for NJ 9, bearing off Bloomfield Avenue in Glen Ridge and following Belleville Avenue into Belleville. The remainder of Bloomfield Avenue between Glen Ridge and Newark is designated SR 506 SPUR. Motorists on the Garden State Parkway are led by signage to believe that Bloomfield Avenue is SR 506 all the way through, as Exit 148 is signed for SR 506. Southbound traffic can utilize Exit 149 to reach Belleville Avenue, but the sign does not acknowledge it as the actual SR 506.
