State Highways of New Jersey


The Atlantic City Expressway took over 30 years to be built. A parkway from Camden to Atlantic City was proposed as early as 1932, after the opening of the Ben Franklin Bridge facilitated traffic flow between Philadelphia and New Jersey. Traffic heading for the shore resort city had to use either of two old roads, the Black Horse Pike (NJ 42) or the White Horse Pike (NJ 43), both of which, it was feared, would soon be filled to capacity.

The 1950s saw the start of construction of the North-South Freeway (now I-676, I-76, and the northern half of NJ 42), as well as the Walt Whitman Bridge connecting Gloucester City to the port district of Philadelphia. Calls increased for a high-speed highway that would speed traffic to the Shore, and in 1962 Gov. Robert Meyner authorized the New Jersey Expressway Authority to build the Atlantic City Expressway as a toll road, similar to the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. Construction began that summer, and the road was open between the North-South Freeway and the Garden State Parkway in the summer of 1964, and all the way to Atlantic City by the summer of 1965. The road is given the designation NJ 446 by NJDOT, the next number in sequence after the Garden State Parkway (NJ 444) and the Palisades Interstate Parkway (NJ 445).

In 1991, the duties of the Expressway Authority were enhanced. The South Jersey Transportation Authority would run not only the Atlantic City Expressway, but also Atlantic City International Airport and bus service between parking lots along the freeway and the Atlantic City casinos. The SJTA also built the Brigantine Connector which allows traffic off the ACE to reach the marina district; the road also connects to NJ 87, the road to Brigantine.

Despite the fact that I-76 runs into the Expressway via NJ 42, there are no plans to extend the I-76 designation down the Expressway. Apparently, there is no provision for adding extra mileage to the Interstate system at this time. The Expressway would also need some modifications, such as higher bridge clearances, in order to be brought up to Interstate standards.

Brigantine Connector

The Brigantine Connector, built between 1998 and 2001, connects the Atlantic City Expressway with the marina district and Brigantine Boulevard, NJ 87. NJDOT does not log the ramp to Brigantine Boulevard as part of the connector’s mileage, although it, like the rest of the road, is maintained by the South Jersey Transportation Authority. Instead, the mileage continues down the ramp to US 30, where it ends along North Carolina Avenue.
