State Highways of New Jersey

Part of the design of the Interstate system was to include bypass routes around major cities, and I-287 serves that function by skirting New York at an average radius of about 30 miles. Interestingly, it draws its number from I-87 rather than from I-95, even though each terminus of the highway is I-95. A full beltway would perhaps have included a new bridge across Long Island Sound and new expressways on Long Island and Staten Island. Ultimately, this was deemed unnecessary.

As it stands, the highway stretches from Woodbridge, N.J., at a junction with NJ 440 and the New Jersey Turnpike, out through Bridgewater, Basking Ridge, Morristown, Boonton, and up to Suffern, where it follows the New York State Thruway across the Tappan Zee Bridge and then the Cross-Westchester Expressway (a road also administered by the Thruway Authority) to the New England Thruway at Port Chester.

The southernmost four miles of the highway were originally designated as part of I-95 as well as I-287, as the original plan was to extend I-95 as the Somerset Expressway between Ewing and Piscataway. Even after the Somerset Expressway was canceled, exit numbers on I-287 differed from their mile markers by about four until the highway exits were renumbered in the early 1990s. Yellow exit banners marked, for instance, “FORMERLY EXIT 29” (at Harter Road in Morris Township) dotted the road for several years.

The northernmost stretch in New Jersey, from Boonton to Mahwah, was not completed until 1993, thanks to arguments over property rights and wildlife conservation. This section includes about a mile and a half previously designated NJ 208 and also overlays the north end of NJ 17.
