State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 284 connects the borough of Sussex with the community of Slate Hill in Town of Wawayanda, N.Y.

Back in the 1930s and ’40s, this was NJ 8N. The number apparently derived from the pre-1927 designation of NJ 8 for the road that became NJ 23 in the legislative act of 1927, as the highway does originate at NJ 23 in Sussex. However, it is also possible that the number derives from the 1927 version of NJ 8, which became NJ 94 in 1953. NJ 8N might have been designated, but not maintained by the state, from NJ 94 in Hampton along US 206, SR 565, and CR 639 to NJ 23 in Sussex and then along present-day NJ 284.

In 1953, NJ 8N became NJ 84. The previous path of the road in one section of Wantage Township is still called “Old Route 84”. The highway number was changed when New York renamed its portion of the road as NY 284 upon the construction of I-84 just to the north of Slate Hill, and New Jersey matched the designation. 284 does go “to 84”, but not directly, as one must take a short stretch of US 6 to reach the freeway.
