State Highways of New Jersey

Interstate 280 connects I-80 in Parsippany with the New Jersey Turnpike in Kearny. Besides its connection with I-80, the road serves as a local freeway bypass of NJ 10 (which was never taken over by the state east of West Orange) and SR 508, with which it has several interchanges.

Originally, I-280 was supposed to go through Newark on an entirely new road. Ramps were built to take the highway through the north end of Newark. That project was eventually canceled, and so through traffic on I-280 only has two lanes to utilize an expressway that was built in the 1950s as NJ 58 and leads across the Stickel drawbridge. (The exit ramp has three lanes.) The freeway was then connected to the opposite side of the bridge in Harrison.
