State Highways of New Jersey

The divided highway is built to near-expressway standards, much like NJ 3 and also NJ 4 east of 208, except that local zoning has kept the road relatively free of commercial development. At times, 208 resembles a parkway. There are no crossings at grade, although a few streets intersect the highway. A dangerous traffic light at McBride Avenue in Fair Lawn (milepost 2.44, between Fair Lawn Avenue and Maple Avenue) was eliminated in the 1990s. There are two houses of worship, one gas station, a few factories, and several professional buildings on the highway, and that’s it. The road is posted at 55 mph for its entire length.

The road is carried as a north-south highway by NJDOT, as it was originally expected to swing northward beyond Oakland; as it stands, it has more of an east-west vector to it. While NJ 208 is entirely on the north side of NJ 4, the north-south designation does create an incongruity at I-287 in Oakland, which uses about a mile of right-of-way that once belonged to NJ 208. At the merge, traffic continuing straight ahead proceeds from NJ 208 northbound to I-287 southbound, and vice versa. Then again, 59 miles south in Edison, traffic heading southbound on I-287 reaches milepost 0 and suddenly finds itself heading northbound on NJ 440. In each case, the freeway is essentially running east and west at the transition point.
