State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 172 is part of the alignment of NJ S-28, which is the old spur route that was proposed to run from Plainfield to New Brunswick and on to Matawan. Part of the road was built from Piscataway to Matawan and became NJ 18 in 1953; later, NJ 18 was moved off the George Street alignment and closer to the Raritan River, but a portion of George Street remains under state maintenance.

SR 527 also runs along George Street in this stretch; the highways run concurrently for the entire length of NJ 172.
