State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 166 is the original routing of NJ 4 (now US 9) through Toms River.

In the early 1950s, a bypass was built around downtown Toms River, leaving this highway as the business route through Toms River. Part of that bypass is now part of the Garden State Parkway. With the elimination of most business-route banners in New Jersey, this highway was renumbered 166.

The other stretch where the Parkway bypassed NJ 4, over the Mullica River between Port Republic and Bass River, is NJ 167.

NJ 166 is now one-way northbound over the Toms River (between South Toms River Borough and Toms River Township). Southbound traffic turns right on Water Street (SR 527), left on Irons Street, and left on Herflicke Boulevard in South Toms River in order to rejoin Atlantic City Boulevard.
