State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 159 is an early alignment of NJ 6 (now US 46). Originally, NJ 9 was legislated to follow Bloomfield Avenue from Montville down to Montclair. The state took over Bloomfield Avenue down to Clinton Avenue so it would only have to build one bridge over the Passaic River. NJ 9 was never taken over by the state, and so its course is now SR 506. When the state built Pellington Boulevard for Route 46, it utilized a new bridge over the Passaic (and bypassed Bloomfield Avenue for several miles, leaving a disconnect in the old road), and this highway was orphaned.
