State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 122 is part of an early alignment of NJ 28, which ran from Phillipsburg to Elizabeth. The road soon became designated as US 22; when US 22 was later rerouted to bypass downtown Phillipsburg (by hooking into NJ 24, now NJ 57), this roadway was orphaned. Its number comes from its prior existence as part of US 22.

The westernmost mile or so of old US 22 in New Jersey is no longer logged as part of the highway; it, along with the logged portion of the highway within the Town of Phillipsburg, is now maintained by Warren County and is county road 678.

For the section of old NJ 28 (US 22) between Pohatcong and Clinton, see NJ 173.
