State Highways of New Jersey

Originally, NJ 4 (and US 9) ended in the city of Cape May, but when the new Lewes-to-Cape May ferry landing was built in Lower Township, Route 9 was relocated to end at the new landing (and a section of US 9 was designated in Delaware as well). NJ 109 is old Route 9 heading down into Cape May, except that a new bridge over the Cape May Canal has displaced the current highway from old Route 9 for several thousand feet.

The highway is now maintained by Cape May County within the limits of Cape May City. For a block just below the inlet separating Cape May from Lower Township, county officials have rerouted northbound traffic by one block to the east; there, the highway uses Washington Avenue rather than Lafayette Avenue.
