State Highways of New Jersey


NJ 88 is the original south end of NJ 35. As originally legislated, NJ 35 started in Lakewood, ran ten miles east to Point Pleasant, and then turned northward. Later on, NJ 35 was rerouted down the shore, to take in what had been NJ 37 between Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights; the east-west stretch of NJ 35 between Lakewood and Point Pleasant became NJ 88.

Along with US 9 (in “Born to Run”), NJ 88 is one of two Shore-area highways that Freehold native Bruce Springsteen sings about in his 1970s songs. “Spirit in the Night” makes reference to “a mile down on the dark side of Route 88”, but if NJ 88 once had a “dark side”, it has been developed in the decades since.

In the vicinity of NJ 70 in Brick, the highway briefly splits into eastern and western alignments for the sake of traffic control. The alignments are combined in this log.
