State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 81 was originally envisioned as part of an Elizabeth bypass. Route 1 runs through the heart of Elizabeth, so this road was going to curve around it on the bay side and hook into the Goethals Bridge. However, the only section that was built was this short stretch on the north end of Elizabeth, connecting Route 1 with the Turnpike at interchange 13A and providing easier access to Newark Airport from points south. The road is a freeway, the state’s shortest.
