State Highways of New Jersey


Interstate 80, designated the Christopher Columbus Highway in some areas, is a coast-to-coast freeway originating in California. From its western terminus in downtown San Francisco, the road traverses Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania before crossing into the Garden State.

Most of the section in Bergen and Passaic counties was part of the Bergen-Passaic Expressway, a road planned in the 1940s but not completed until the 1960s to alleviate congestion on US 1/9/46 and NJ 4 as approaches to the George Washington Bridge. Specifically, the Bergen-Passaic Expressway was designed to pull Paterson-bound traffic off NJ 4. When the road was added to the Interstate highway system, it became part of a greater conduit from the west; however, the last sections of I-80 west of Paterson were not completed until the 1970s.

A little-remembered fact is that I-80 occupies the old right-of-way of the Lackawanna Railroad main line going around the base of Garret Mountain in Paterson and Woodland Park, and overlays it for a bit in Totowa as well. The Lackawanna bridge abutments at the Passaic River are still visible from McBride Avenue in Woodland Park and Riverview Drive in Totowa.

Further west, I-80 uses a section of old US 611, which at one time crossed the Columbia-Portland bridge (now part of NJ 94) into New Jersey and then crossed back into Pennsylvania over the Delaware Water Gap Bridge. When Route 611 was decommissioned as a US highway, PennDOT rerouted PA 611 along its side of the river between Portland and Delaware Water Gap. The New Jersey highway section became part of US 46 and was later adopted as part of I-80. The stretch is not built to modern Interstate standards, as it rides along the river at the bottom of a cliff; for the first mile or so in New Jersey, the speed is posted at 50 mph.

Contrary to popular belief, I-80 does not go to New York, even though New York is given as a control city on eastbound signs throughout New Jersey and even near Youngstown, Ohio (but not, curiously, in Pennsylvania). Prior to the completion of I-95 in the Ridgefield Park area, the entire Bergen-Passaic Expressway was signed I-80; today, the route’s eastern terminus is at the New Jersey Turnpike in Teaneck.
