State Highways of New Jersey

Interstate 76 is a mainly east-west road starting west of Akron, Ohio, and becoming the Pennsylvania Turnpike for about 325 miles in the Keystone State, bypassing Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. It then exits the Turnpike and heads down the Schuylkill Expressway to Philadelphia before crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge into New Jersey. The short Garden State section serves mainly as the approach road to the Whitman bridge, as well as an access road to I-676, which approaches the Ben Franklin Bridge to center city Philadephia.

I-76 is inventoried from south to north by NJDOT, rather than from east to west, as it is a continuation of the Atlantic City Expressway and the North-South Freeway. There are no plans to have those two roads added as a continuation of I-76. The exit numbers 1 and 2 are assigned as if it is a north-south road; the exit numbers on I-676 follow this numbering pattern, based on milepost 0 at I-295. The Delaware River Port Authority designates the eastbound exit for the I-76 Connector (NJ 76C) as exit 354, continuing the Pennsylvania mileage of I-76.
