State Highways of New Jersey

Originally, the road was conceived as NJ S-40, a spur off NJ 40 between Camden and Lakewood, but the road was first legislated only to the Manahawkin section of Stafford Township. It was soon extended, though, across Manahawkin Bay to the beach resorts.

The highway’s number changed in 1953, when the state eliminated spur route designations.
