State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 52 is a state-built causeway that provides the easiest access from points north to the resort town of Ocean City. The road emanates from Route 9 in Somers Point and crosses the Great Egg Harbor, utilizing several harbor islands en route. The road is vital enough to shore traffic that the Garden State Parkway has a southbound exit at Laurel Drive, which connects to NJ 52.

The main bridges, which date back to 1932 and 1933, were in need of replacement for years merely due to the traffic volume they sustain. The project to replace these crossings is complete as of the beginning of 2013. The new road carries six lanes of traffic and accommodates scenic view turnoffs and fishing piers. As a side project to the bridge construction, the Somers Point Circle, where Shore Road (SR 559 and SR 585) crosses NJ 52, has been removed and replaced by a signalized intersection.
