State Highways of New Jersey

The 1927 highway legislation established Route 6 to run from Delaware to the new Hudson River Bridge, now the George Washington Bridge, supplanting old Routes 5 and 12. Old Route 10 was removed from the system except for the new highway the state had built between Ridgefield and Edgewater, which is now NJ 5, and the state started building a new road for Route 6 between Totowa and Fort Lee. That road was complete from the George Washington Bridge down to Hasbrouck Heights by 1932, and the Pellington Boulevard from Pine Brook to Totowa was ready soon afterward, but the Paterson bypass was not complete until the early 1940s. US 46, which was designated to follow the entire length of Route 6 in 1936, used two spurs to get into and out of Paterson for those years. NJ 6N, part of which is now NJ 62, ran north from Totowa, while NJ S-6, since reverted to municipal jurisdiction, ran west from the junction of NJ 3, 4, and 6 (now US 46 and NJ 20) at the Clifton-Paterson line.

At the west end of the highway, a new bridge was opened between Portland, Pa., and Columbia at the end of 1953, operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. This replaced the old Darlington bridge connecting to Mount Bethel, Pa. NJ 94, which used to hook down from Columbia to Delaware, was then truncated to the new bridge, and US 46 (the NJ 6 designation was dropped in 1953, when the state eliminated concurrent designations with US routes) was extended upstream and routed across the new bridge to Portland. Today, only NJ 94 and an unmarked Pennsylvania reference route use that bridge; the western terminus of US 46 is a merge with I-80 just upstream from the bridge. The approach to the Darlington bridge, which was dismantled in 1954, is now NJ 163; a stream crossing on that short route is still stamped with “State Highway Route 5”, a silent tribute to the highway’s early history.

As a highway of less than 300 miles running completely within a single state, US 46 no longer meets the criteria to be signed as a US highway, but it remains on the books, having never been removed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. After more than half a century known only as “46”, the state would likely rename the road NJ 46 if its US highway designation were ever stripped.

US 46 officially continues to the New York state line on the George Washington Bridge, the extent of the original legislation of NJ 6. The highway is signed up to the end of NJDOT jurisdiction at Fletcher Avenue in Fort Lee, US 9W, at which point the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey assumes jurisdiction. By a legislative act, the road is also called the United Spanish War Veterans Memorial Highway. However, old street names still exist in some sections. These are noted.
