State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 44 was legislated in 1927 as a state takeover of Crown Point Road, which started in Penns Grove at NJ 48 and ran up through Bridgeport and Paulsboro, ending at NJ 47 in Westville. NJ 47 would then continue up to Camden.

US 130 was later designated to run along NJ 44 and the section of NJ 47 north of Westville. In the early 1950s, US 130 was rerouted onto a new Paulsboro bypass (much of which is also used today by I-295). Today’s NJ 44 is a ten-mile stretch of the highway that is still maintained by the state through the bypassed area.

The southern end of the current highway is in “downtown” Bridgeport, in Logan Township, where the highway fades into local streets that no longer connect to US 130 thanks to the interchange with US 322 and the Commodore Barry Bridge approach. The northern end is at a ramp off I-295 that is one-way southbound north of that point.
