State Highways of New Jersey

With the designation of US highways, the portion of the Black Horse Pike east of Williamstown (in Monroe Township) became part of US 322. Come 1953, when the state eliminated duplicate designations along US routes, that had the effect of truncating NJ 42 to Williamstown.

Subsequently, the Atlantic City Expressway was built between the shore resort and Washington Township, and the state built the North-South Freeway to connect it to the bridges to Philadelphia. That had the effect of bypassing yet another section of the Black Horse Pike, which became NJ 168. (168 happens to be 4 x 42. Aren’t they clever?) Later, the north end of the North-South Freeway became I-76 and I-676.
