State Highways of New Jersey

Several years later, it was proposed that NJ 38 head across the Pine Barrens, thus connecting Camden with Belmar. A short stretch of the highway was built between Wall and Belmar, now known as NJ 138, but nothing was built between Southampton and Wall. Similarly, NJ 37 was legislated from Trenton clear across to Toms River, but it was never built across the Pine Barrens either. Eventually, the two proposals to cross the state were combined into a single Federal-aid project, resulting in I-195 between Hamilton and Wall, where it met NJ 138 and provided a connection between Trenton and Belmar. NJ 70 was deemed to be a sufficient route between Camden and the Toms River area, while the Garden State Parkway in the east and I-295 in the west handle any necessary north-south movements.
