State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 37 is a 13-mile spur leading from NJ 40 (now NJ 70) in Lakehurst to NJ 35 in Seaside Heights.

As envisioned in the 1927 state highway legislation, NJ 37 was supposed to start from Trenton and head south, then east through Allentown, to Lakehurst, where it would pick up the current route and then turn north at Seaside Heights, ending at Point Pleasant. The entire eastern section of the highway was built, as was a very short section of highway mainly in Bordentown (now part of US 206 and SR 524), but no work was done between Bordentown and Lakehurst. (SR 528 and SR 571 approximate the route, although SR 571 comes in north of the Lakehurst junction of NJ 70 and NJ 37.)

Similarly, NJ 38 was projected to head across the Pine Barrens, connecting Camden with Belmar, but that highway was never built between Southampton and Wall. Eventually, the two proposals to cross the state were combined into a single Federal-aid project, resulting in I-195 between Hamilton and Wall, where it connected to a previously built portion of NJ 38 now known as NJ 138 and provided a connection between Trenton and Belmar.

In a later highway revision, NJ 35 was made to head south over the ocean corridor originally designated for NJ 37 between NJ 88 in Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights. NJ 35 continues south to the entrance for Island Beach State Park.

The Toms River section of NJ 37 is dedicated as Little League World Champions Boulevard, in honor of the 1998 Toms River East American team that won the 12-year-old Little League World Series. The twin bridges crossing Barnegat Bay are dedicated to J. Stanley Tunney (eastbound) and Thomas Mathis (westbound).
