State Highways of New Jersey

Originally, NJ 35 began in downtown Lakewood and headed east to Point Pleasant before turning north along the shore. Later on, several routes were altered. The Lakewood-to-Point Pleasant segment of NJ 35 became NJ 88. At that time, NJ 35 was extended southward along the shoreline portion of what had been NJ 37, and beyond. The south end of NJ 35 is now the entrance to Island Beach State Park in Berkeley Township. NJ 37, which originally turned north at Seaside Heights and came up through Mantoloking and Bay Head to Point Pleasant (much as NJ 36 loops along the shoreline from Long Branch to Sandy Hook), was truncated to Seaside Heights. NJ 40 (now NJ 70), which ended at NJ 35 (now NJ 88) in Laurelton, was extended along NJ 34 to meet NJ 35 at the Brielle Circle.

A further alteration of NJ 35 occurred on its north end, when NJ 4 and US 9 were rerouted from the Victory Bridge (between Sayreville and Perth Amboy) to the newer Edison Bridge (between Sayreville and Woodbridge). Since NJ 35 was the more direct path to the bridges (it ended at the Sayreville circle just south of both bridges), US 9 was removed from its old Main Street path through South Amboy and relocated so that it joined NJ 35 for a little over a mile. With the new US 9 continuing in Woodbridge to a junction with US 1 just south of the old NJ 4, NJ 35 was relocated onto the old NJ 4 path across the Victory Bridge and through Perth Amboy to the junction with NJ 27 in Rahway, which was as far as the southern section of NJ 4 was ever built. Main Street in South Amboy, once a stretch of NJ 4, is now under municipal jurisdiction.

The Victory Bridge was replaced in the early 2000s. The original span was a drawbridge; the new one is a fixed-span bridge that rises high above the Raritan River, similar to the nearby Edison Bridge, which was also recently reconstructed. North of there, the oldest cloverleaf interchange in New Jersey, at the intersection with US 1 and US 9, was reconfigured; the ramps to southbound US 1/9 now have traffic signals on NJ 35.

Also, the old Brielle circle in Wall Township, where NJ 34, NJ 35, and NJ 70 meet, was converted to a straight-through signalized intersection in the early 2000s. Traffic on NJ 35 north must turn right or it winds up on NJ 34; southbound traffic must turn left to avoid the start of NJ 70.

For two stretches in Ocean County, one in Point Pleasant Beach (1.43 miles) and the other in Brick, Toms River, and Lavallette (5.54 miles), NJ 35 southbound uses different streets than NJ 35 northbound. Both roadways are state-maintained, and NJDOT logs them separately (as NJ 35Z). I have combined the logs here for ease of reference.
