State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 33 runs from Trenton to Neptune. The highway leaves downtown Trenton as Greenwood Avenue, maintained by the City of Trenton, and then enters Hamilton and picks up Nottingham Way. The highway bypasses the centers of Mercerville and Hamilton Square by staying one block south of Nottingham Way, but rejoins the old road just as it crosses into Robbinsville. There, it promptly diverges again and joins with US 130 (the former NJ 25) for about 4½ miles before entering Hightstown on the old Cranbury-to-Bordentown turnpike, now called Mercer Road. In downtown Hightstown, NJ 33 turns eastward toward Freehold, picking up a piece of the short Manalapan-to-Freehold turnpike along the way, and then continues through the north end of Howell and Wall and the southern edge of Tinton Falls.

Just west of the Garden State Parkway, NJ 66 veers off to the left. This is the original alignment of NJ 33, which was legislated in 1927 as running to “West Asbury Park”. NJ 33 stays to the south, entering Neptune and ending at NJ 71, which is the original alignment of NJ 4, the main shore route.

In the 1980s, the Freehold Bypass was built, allowing through traffic on NJ 33 to skirt around the Monmouth County seat. The old highway is still maintained by NJDOT as NJ 33 BUSINESS.
