State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 24 began its life as the Morris & Essex Turnpike, which eventually stretched all the way across the state from Phillipsburg to Newark. Part of the road was taken over by the state prior to 1927 and was designated as NJ 12 at that time. The 1927 state highway legislation identified the road as NJ 24, but only the sections from Phillipsburg to Hackettstown and from Morristown to Irvington ever came under jurisdiction of the State Highway Commission. To this day, however, NJ 24 signs remain on the sections of county road that were used in lieu of a new highway. To follow the old turnpike, today’s motorist would use US 22, NJ 57, SR 517, SR 513, SR 510, NJ 124, and Essex CR 603.

In the 1970s, a new freeway was built to bypass the existing NJ 24 between Millburn and Springfield. For a time, until I-78 was completed through the Watchung Reservation, the section of I-78 east of the merge also bore the NJ 24 designation. The concurrency was dropped after NJ 24 was extended westward in the early 1990s.

The current NJ 24 starts at I-287 in Hanover Township, a few miles north of Morristown, and runs down to I-78 in Springfield. While an extension beyond Hanover has been discussed, there are currently no plans in the works to build it. The bypassed old highway is now NJ 124, which straddles the NJ 24 freeway in the 1970s section where it runs along the county line between Summit and Millburn. West of I-287, traffic still uses either “old Route 24” or NJ 10, which sits a few miles to the north.
