State Highways of New Jersey

Part of the highway is part of a spur route from NJ 28 running between Plainfield and Matawan, legislated in 1927 as NJ S-28. Not all of that route was taken over and maintained by NJDOT, although the section between New Brunswick and Old Bridge was built.

A second section was built as a freeway extension to the Shore, although this road was also never completed. The freeway was proposed to extend down to the Brielle Circle at NJ 34, NJ 35 and NJ 70, but it was only built from Old Bridge to Wall. To the best of my knowledge, the section from Wall to Brielle is no longer proposed; however, the mileposts on NJ 18 begin with 5.14 as a result of the original proposal.

A third section was built as a northerly extension serving the Rutgers University campus in Piscataway. While maps prior to the 1990s listed CR 622 in Piscataway as part of NJ 18, the stretch was always maintained by Middlesex County. This extension takes the road in the general direction of Plainfield, where NJ S-28 was supposed to originate; however, state maintenance abruptly ends just beyond the campus and there are no plans to extend the highway further.
