State Highways of New Jersey

Coming from Pennsylvania, US 1 enters New Jersey on a 1950s-vintage freeway which bypasses the Trenton-New Brunswick Turnpike, which was built in 1804, operated privately through 1903, and assumed into the state highway system in 1927 as NJ 26. The road then picks up the “Straight Turnpike” for 17 miles before bearing off to pick up old NJ 25 for its run up to Newark, where it splits into four carriageways as it passes the airport. As it bends around the airport and approaches the top of Newark Bay, the highway follows the grand bypass known as the Pulaski Skyway, built in 1932 to fly over the navigable Passaic and Hackensack rivers and provide an express route to the Holland Tunnel. At the east end of the Skyway, Route 1 once continued straight through to the Holland Tunnel, but in the mid-1930s the route was redirected up NJ 1 to the George Washington Bridge, which opened in 1931. The Holland Tunnel approach is now NJ 139 and I-78.

For their northernmost 30 miles in New Jersey (and a mile in New York), US 1 and US 9 are concurrent. For years, the road has been referred to by motorists and traffic reporters as “one-nine” or “one-n-nine”. The two highways are so intertwined through the stretch that in the mid-1990s, NJDOT signs started appearing that placed both numbers within one shield, separated by a hyphen, “1-9”, or an ampersand, “1&9”. Also, there has been a three-mile overlap of NJ 6 (now US 46) approaching the George Washington Bridge since US 1 (along with US 9) was rerouted over the bridge.
